Bobbi Althoff deepfake spotlights X's role as a top source of AI porn

Washington Post - Technology News

To replace X's moderators, Musk has often pointed to "Community Notes," in which volunteers can suggest comments that will -- with enough votes of approval -- show up on specific tweets. But many of the posts with the fake Althoff video include no such notes, and some of the notes did not show up until hours after the video went viral. The notes also don't do anything to prevent a clip from being viewed, shared or saved.

Can AI porn be ethical?

The Guardian

When Ashley Neale started college in Texas in 2013, she needed money to pay for school. So, at the age of 18, she worked first as a cam girl and then as a stripper. Men would try to slip their fingers between her legs as she walked from the stage to the dressing room so often that she learned how to dislocate their shoulders. After her third successful dislocation, her manager told her to stop defending herself. Since then, she's continued her career in sex work – but in the tech world. She worked at FetLife, a social network for the fetish community; experimented with a subscription site for adult content where users paid in crypto; and has now created her own AI romance app: MyPeach.ai, which uses AI-generated text and imagery to replicate the experience of chatting – and sexting – with someone online.

Welcome to the seventeenth bi-weekly Tech News Digest by the GISA Technology and Security Initiative. Our goal is to give you an easy-to-read overview of what has been happening in the world of technology and security. To do so we have chosen a few of the top news stories from the last two weeks and present you with a summary. If you are interested in learning more follow the links below. Several private fusion companies are moving from the small-scale lab to the larger electrical grid, with plans from General Fusion (Canada), Tokamak Energy (UK), Commonwealth Fusion Systems (USA), Helion Energy (USA), TAE Technologies (USA), and First Light Fusion (UK) all rapidly emerging with plans for their next-to-last prototypes of power stations.

When It Comes to OnlyFans, Humans Can Outcompete AI

WIRED

In the spring of 2001, when I was just 18 years old, I launched a multiyear career as an online porn model and cam girl, giving paying customers access to my naked body in the form of photo sets and weekly cam shows broadcast in the members' sections of my paysites. By today's standards, the work I did was laughably low-fi. The bulk of what I put out into the world was just softcore stills. Even my cam shows only offered viewers the chance to watch an image refresh every 15 seconds or so, basically providing access to a slow-moving digital flipbook. Over the course of three and a half years, I only shot two videos--and one of them was completely silent, thanks to a malfunctioning microphone.

The Download: blocking AI porn, and brain data privacy

MIT Technology Review

The news: The popular AI image generator Midjourney bans a wide range of words about the human reproductive system from being used as prompts, MIT Technology Review has discovered. The list of banned words seem to skew predominantly female, including terms such as "placenta," "fallopian tubes," and "mammary glands." The company says it's banning these words as a stopgap measure to prevent people from generating shocking or gory content while it "improves things on the AI side." Why it matters: Midjourney's crude banning of prompts relating to reproductive biology highlights how tricky it is to moderate content around generative AI systems. It also demonstrates how the tendency for AI systems to sexualize women extends all the way to their internal organs. Our senior biotech reporter Jessica Hamzelou has been in Lisbon, Portugal this week to attend a scientific conference on brain stimulation.

AI porn is easy to make now. For women, that's a nightmare.

Washington Post - Technology News

The growing supply of deepfakes is driven by demand: Following Ewing's apology, a flood of traffic to the website hosting the deepfakes caused the site to crash repeatedly, said independent researcher Genevieve Oh. The number of new videos on the site almost doubled from 2021 to 2022 as AI imaging tools proliferated, she said. Deepfake creators and app developers alike make money from the content by charging for subscriptions or soliciting donations, Oh found, and Reddit has repeatedly hosted threads dedicated to finding new deepfake tools and repositories.

AI is getting better at generating porn

#artificialintelligence

A red-headed woman stands on the moon, her face obscured. Her naked body looks like it belongs on a poster you'd find on a hormonal teenager's bedroom wall -- that is, until you reach her torso, where three arms spit out of her shoulders. AI-powered systems like Stable Diffusion, which translate text prompts into pictures, have been used by brands and artists to create concept images, award-winning (albeit controversial) prints and full-blown marketing campaigns. But some users, intent on exploring the systems' murkier side, have been testing them for a different sort of use case: porn. AI porn is about as unsettling and imperfect as you'd expect (that red-head on the moon was likely not generated by someone with an extra arm fetish).

Reddit bans the 'deepfake' AI porn it helped spawn

Engadget

Hot on the heels of Twitter, Reddit has updated its rules to expressly ban AI-generated "deepfake" porn. Where it previously had a single rule forbidding porn and suggestive material involving minors, it now has two -- and it's clear that you're not allowed to post "depictions that have been faked." Accordingly, Reddit has cracked down on some of the offending communities. It has shut down the deepfakes subreddit that got the ball rolling, as well as YouTubefakes. It hasn't closed non-deepfake subreddits like CelebFakes, however, and it's also maintaining the communities with more innocuous intentions, such as FakeApp (the program itself) and SFWdeepfakes. At the moment, this is more about addressing the specific violations that triggered the uproar than to stamp out every potential violation of the policy.
